What is OSCAR?

OSCAR allows users, regardless of their experience level with a *nix environment, to install a Beowulf type high performance computing cluster. It also contains everything needed to administer and program this type of HPC cluster. OSCAR's flexible package management system has a rich set of pre-packaged applications and utilities which means you can get up and running without laboriously installing and configuring complex cluster administration and communication packages. It also lets administrators create customized packages for any kind of distributed application or utility, and to distribute those packages from an online package repository, either on or off site.

The latest release is OSCAR 5.0, released on November 12, 2006.

Google Summer of Code 2008 Projects Announced

Submitted by miedward on Wed, 2008-04-23 08:52. ::

At the OSCAR project, we're very happy to have three projects slots allocated to us (in the end) for Google's Summer of Code 2008. We had a great crop of applications this year, and it was very tough to pick just three. While we are disappointed we didn't get more slots, we are relishing the opportunity for another great summer of coding. We hope there are no hard feelings and that all the applicants (chosen and not) will consider working on the OSCAR program outside the GSoC program.

This year's projects are as follows:

OSCAR V2M Extension - Student: Panyong Zhang - Mentor: Geoffroy Vallee
Implementation and Integration of a Universal Monitoring Framework - Student: Okoye Chuka - Mentor: Box Leangsuksun
NFS Mountpoints in OSCAR - Student: Paul Greidanus - Mentor: Geoffroy Vallee

The team from the University of Alberta has won the first Cluster Challenge at SC|07. As reported previously, the cluster runs OSCAR where OSCAR's rapid deployment and suite of management/monitoring tools played a role in the outcome. Congratulations to the team.
